How to Make a Pinewood Derby Car Roll Straight

Start with a repeatable test
A Pinewood Derby car that drifts needs a controlled test before it needs a new part. Use a clean 4-to-6-foot test board, mark a centerline, release the car without a hand push, run it three times, and record the drift. Then reverse the board and repeat. This separates a surface problem from a car problem and gives you a baseline before any permitted correction.
A straight roll on one board does not promise a race result. The test is a way to isolate surface slope, wheel or body contact, axle seating, wheel wobble, and alignment. Follow the event rules before changing a wheel, axle, slot, hole, lubricant, or body.
Prepare the board and centerline

2. Release with no hand pressure
Release the car by lifting your hand straight up or by using a simple stop that lets the car start without a sideways shove. Do not push the nose, steer the body, or correct the car while it rolls. Watch from above or from the end of the board and record whether the car moves left or right relative to its forward direction.
Measure the final drift at the end of the marked run from the centerline to the center of the car's nose or another fixed point you can repeat. Record the distance and direction, not only the words straight or crooked. The measurement is for comparison, not a universal pass/fail tolerance.

3. Run the first set three times
Make three runs without changing the car or board. Write down the release direction, final drift distance, and any sound, wobble, or visible body contact. If the car points left on one run and right on another, or the distances vary widely, do not adjust an axle yet. Repeat the release setup and inspect the board, centerline, and wheel contact first.
A repeatable drift has a consistent direction and similar movement across the three runs. A changing drift can indicate an inconsistent release, a loose axle, a wheel that is moving in its opening, a surface obstruction, or a test surface that is too short to reveal the same behavior each time.

4. Reverse the board
Turn the board end-for-end, keeping the same face up and the same supports if possible. Re-mark or extend the centerline so the car still has the same starting and finishing relationship to the board. Repeat the no-hand-release procedure three times and record drift in the same way.
Compare both sets by direction relative to the car and by direction toward the physical room or board edge. If the drift follows the board or room side after the reversal, suspect surface slope or support. If it remains consistent relative to the car's forward direction while the board's high side changes, inspect the car. If neither pattern is clear, improve the setup and gather another set before changing parts.

5. Diagnose one variable at a time
- Surface slope: verify the supports, clean the board, and repeat the forward and reverse tests. A board can steer a car even when the car is sound.
- Wheel or body rub: watch the wheel edge and body opening while the car rolls. Look for finish, adhesive, wood, or a wheel face contacting the body.
- Axle seating: inspect whether an axle is loose, shifted, bent, or seated differently from the others. Do not force or alter it unless the work is permitted.

Make a permitted correction
Confirm the correction is allowed before touching the car. Make one change, keep the other three wheel and axle positions unchanged, and write down what you did. Examples include reseating a permitted loose component, removing a confirmed source of rubbing, cleaning an allowed contact area, or making a small permitted alignment adjustment with the correct tool.
Do not use lubricant as an alignment substitute, bend an axle by guesswork, enlarge an opening without checking body strength and rules, or replace several parts at once. Stop if the correction could weaken the body, create a new clearance issue, or make the original cause harder to identify.
