5. Plan and place the added weight

Estimate the amount still available before drilling or gluing: subtract the car's current weight from the event maximum, then reserve a little for paint, decals, lubricant, and final adjustment.

On many standard gravity tracks, builders place much of the added weight toward the rear while keeping the car stable. A common starting point is a finished-car balance point about 3/4 to 1 inch in front of the rear axle. Moving the weight too far back can make the car unstable, so treat this as a starting point and test the completed car rather than as a guaranteed fastest position.

Before making the installation permanent, check:

  • clearance from the track, center rail, and starting gate;
  • clearance from wheels, axles, and other moving parts;
  • whether the body remains strong around the installation area;
  • whether the weight can be secured for inspection and racing;
  • whether the placement leaves access for a small final adjustment.

6. Install the weight securely

Test the fit before making the installation permanent. Follow the instructions for the exact weight, adhesive, fastener, or body material, and confirm that the material and mounting method are allowed by the event.

The weight must not move, rattle, drag, or protrude into a restricted area. Keep excess adhesive away from wheels and axles, allow it to cure fully, and never take a car to inspection with loose weight inside the body.

7. Adjust and reweigh

If the car is over the limit, remove a small amount from the intended adjustment weight or another approved removable weight. Do not grind wheels, axles, or structural areas as a last-minute weight correction.

If the car is under the intended target, add only an event-approved material that can be secured completely. After every change, zero the scale and repeat the three-reading procedure. Recheck again after paint, decals, lubrication, repairs, or replacement parts.

8. Complete the race-day check

Confirm the finished weight, dimensions, wheel and axle condition, lubrication, clearance, and all other inspection items against the local rules. The official inspection scale has the final reading.
